Random Blog Thoughts

When I started blogging almost three years ago, I had a half dozen ideas or so.  I wondered how many blogs I could write before I ran out of ideas.  Eight?  Ten?  I hoped more would come to me as I went along. Wow! Did they ever. The more I wrote, the more ideas I had.  Sometimes it was just a topic that popped into my head, but sometimes it was a whole rant that would practically blog itself.

I started a list on my computer of possible blog topics. If I have an inspired thought, I jot down a line or two. I have a notebook in my purse and beside my bed. Sitting in my car I’ll quickly jot down a note on a grocery receipt. These thoughts eventually make their way onto the list of ideas in my computer. And even though my blog idea list is now huge, sometimes it’s overwhelming and I’ve been unable to settle on a topic for the past month. ???

As I do with my ‘stuff’ when I feel out of control, I thought maybe a purge would be a good idea and would help me to organize myself.  So, I present a blog of randomness. These thoughts seem to need expression so I can purge them from the list, but they don’t really seem to be enough to blog about on their own.

Who else twists the stem out of an apple before they eat it?  Is that a thing?  I think I learned it from my mom.  Not sure why it would be necessary, but I don’t want to eat an apple that has a stem.

Have you heard that your nose and ears continue to grow throughout your life? I think of this every time I see an older person with particularly large ears or nose. Per the internet, Dr. Oz says that it’s true because cartilage continues to grow throughout your lifetime. Now I don’t want to start anything, but Michael Hinck who blogs for Flushing Hospital Medical Center says that contrary to what many people think, (are you listening, Mehmet?) cartilage does not continue to grow, rather ears and noses get larger because of the breakdown of cartilage and gravity. Gravity seems like a reasonable explanation for ears, but for the nose?

Regarding my own ears, the pandemic has made me aware that one of my ears is higher on my head than the other.  Whenever I was washing my hands in the ladies’ room at work with my mask on, I would notice in the mirror that my mask was crooked on my face.  I kept trying to straighten it until I finally realized it wasn’t the mask it was my ears!

That was a weird discovery.  Which leads me to a different, but somewhat related thought. Have you ever had somebody point something out to you – about yourself – that you didn’t know?  THAT’S an unsettling feeling; realizing that somebody knows something about you that you didn’t even know. I didn’t know that I don’t care for cinnamon until a friend pointed out to me that I always avoided the birthday treats at work that had cinnamon in them!

Who, in all of the world, knows you the best?  I used to say it was my mom, even after I had left home and been married for twenty years.  But honestly MOH does know me so very well.  I love being able to share a look with him and we don’t have to say a word to know what each other is thinking.  We can finish each others’ sentences and who doesn’t love a shared ‘inside’ joke. Other days I just shake my head and feel like I’m sharing my house with a stranger!

Why do some dreams stay with you, and some are gone immediately?  Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, I can feel the memory of a dream there in my mind, but just out of reach.  I think everybody dreams, but MOH says he does not.  Can that be true?  Maybe he just doesn’t remember them ever, but that seems odd as well.

Do people still use shoe polish? Of course, they do. In fact, we have black shoe polish in our house for leather shoes. What about the white kind in a bottle with a little sponge at the top? Anybody? When I was a kid, my mom would use it when she had a scuff mark on her white dress shoes. Sometimes she used it to give my Keds tennis shoes a ā€˜sprucing up’. We had a little cupboard in our basement that was full of shoe polish, brushes, and buffing cloths.

If you wonder if there is anybody that still does ā€˜blank’ the answer is Yes.  I crack up every time I see those questions on Facebook.  “Who remembers grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup?”  Are you kidding me?  I realize not everybody has it for lunch or dinner a couple times a month like we do at our house, but honestly, grilled cheese and tomato soup is NOT a forgotten relic.

I’m not sure if crossing those few items off my list makes me feel any more organized. The list looks just as long. Its like spending a day on organizing family photos. Wow! Now there’s a topic for another day.

  1. What a great idea for you’re a blog this time. I love random thoughts that I can relate to.

And I absolutely laughed out loud hearing about your crooked ears.

  2. Yes, twist the stem of the apple.

I remember, from elementary school, that with the first twist you start saying the alphabet. The letter you are on when the stem breaks is the first letter of the name of the person you are going to marry :0)
