My family has always been a summer vacation family. When I was growing up, we either went up north or to visit family. Since my mom’s family lived up north, it was often a combo trip. When our son was young, we would go camping or to amusement parks. We visited caves, zoos, and museums.
Since giving up our camper, and spending the last two summers either recovering from surgery or avoiding COVID, we still haven’t quite found our groove – as empty nesters – for summer vacation venues. This year, we thought we’d try a staycation and do a mix of fun and relaxing local things as well as getting some home projects done. Here’s the Top 10 List of what I did on my summer vacation.
- We met some good friends at a popular ice cream hangout. Mmmm. Turtle sundae. My favorite.
- We met family for lunch and went on a much-anticipated field trip to the bookstore.
- MOH developed a cough and took a COVID test as a precaution. (We’ve both been vaccinated and cautious. No reason to think he has COVID, but there is a surge going on.)
- We ended up having to call aforementioned good friends and family to let them know we both had breakthrough COVID cases and would be quarantining for the next 10 days. They should monitor for symptoms.
- We had two grocery and one Best Buy porch drop offs and many more offers. Thank you.
- We watched 37 episodes of Shitt$ Creek.
- We sat on our deck for five minutes until the oppressive heat and humidity drove us back inside.
- I finished six books and caught up on eleven issues of PEOPLE magazine. (I was a little behind. And PLEASE enough about J-Lo and Ben Affleck!)
- MOH and I shared an entire pan of Nestle tollhouse cookie bars.
- We did not complete a single around-the-house project.
Somehow, I remember summer vacations being a lot more fun when I was kid.
